After Thanos, Carol Danvers will face off a new villain in her standalone sequel. Actor Zawe Ashton has been roped in against Brie Larson to play the main antagonist in the upcoming MCU film, Captain Marvel 2, as per Variety.
Directed by Nia DaCosta, the sequel is a follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster Captain Marvel. Marvel Studios is yet to reveal more details about Ashton’s character.
Alongside Larson and Ashton, the cast will include Iman Vellani as Ms Marvel from the upcoming Disney+ series of the same name, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau who’s now seen in Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany starrer WandaVision.
Helmed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, Captain Marvel was a massive success leading its blockbuster climax in Avengers: Endgame. The audience then saw Larson’s Danvers (Captain Marvel) in a pivotal role in rescuing Iron Man and eventually beating Thanos in the culmination of the Infinity Saga. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel received mixed reviews.
Ashton is best known for Netflix’s art satire Velvet Buzzsaw, and she did a pretty decent job there. Her other credits include TV series Fresh Meat, Tom Ford’s thriller Nocturnal Animals and the psychological horror film Greta. Megan McDonnell, WandaVision story editor, is penning Captain Marvel 2 script.
In the first movie, Danvers (Brie Larson) was a human who gained superpowers but lost her memory in the process. As a result, she spent most of her life living as a member of the Kree alien race. However, she eventually regained her memories and learned that everything she had been taught was a lie. However, the superhuman character was brought into the present day in Avengers: Endgame – and Captain Marvel 2 is likely to be set post that.
Captain Marvel 2 is slated to hit big screens on 11 November 2022.
